I studied Botany at Cambridge and then spent two years in Papua New Guinea studying symbiosis between plants and ants. After a DPhil on the plant taxonomy, and raising two daughters I worked for the County, now Local, Wildlife Sites Project. While at school I joined the Cambridge Conservation Volunteers, and later helped set up a similar group in Oxford. In 1994 I helped establish the Rare Plants Group, now the Oxfordshire Flora Group, of the Ashmolean Natural History Society of Oxfordshire.
